The Great Bank Holiday Swindale

Monday May 30th
Late call from BP with a long list of possibles, all west of Pennines given the pronounced weather east/west grim/sunny split.  Bank Holiday Monday criteria applied (traffic, parking, crowds on the crag, speed of access, Appleby Fair travellers, opportunities for new routes, warm weather).  All requirements (apart from warmth) fully met by the ever reliable...
Gouther Crag
Fang last climbed 2004 (AT,KW) and BP around the time Lassie was born
Other routes both not done

BP finds a Fangtastic position on this Lakeland Classic, a gem of a route

AT P2

BP on Doghouse VS 4b (below)
Oddly enough the neigbouring route - Left Edge, goes up to the right of this

BP gets his nose on the rock and looks (in vain) for some gear

But sniffs out a slot for two man's best friends out left by the arete

4m of bold climbing leads to rewarding gear left of the heather at top right.

Great climbing, the dog's B@!!@x

Walkies it aint

Climber psyching up for the unprotected crux on Bloodhound (E2 5b)
Cajones essential
Doghouse shown on left

Plenty of action on the crag, climbers (L-R) on Sostenuto, The Fang Direct, and Left Edge
Lines of The Fang and Doghouse also shown (blue and yellow)

BP going really well - saddles up Scabby Horse

Fine, well protected crux right at the top

Had to wait a while for rope of three to lead and clear the top section of Hernia (HVS 5a) which shares the same finish

Todays GO-TO leader moving with great purpose towards better holds higher up

Spliffing ride home

Finally feeling the warmth of the rays
